Wildlife that arrived before we did
Kilvington Lakes is classified as a local wildlife area, with an abundance of species throughout the year - and we work with several voluntary conservation groups to manage the habitat.
Wildlife
On the estate
Birds
190 species recorded last season, with rare sightings of bittern, quail and osprey. Over winter, 2,000 plus geese and duck frequent the lakes.
Water
Otters come off the River Devon to feed on crayfish in the Woodland lake, and the lakes hold many fish species including specimen carp and pike.
Meadow and woodland
Orchids, a wide diversity of flora and abundant insect life including the rare grizzled skipper butterfly, with brown hare, roe and muntjac deer, fox and badger.
Walking
Walking from the gate
Mown tracks lead through woodland and wild meadow to the River Devon on the northern boundary, and a short walk takes you to the local pub.
For longer days, Sherwood Forest, Rutland Water and the Lincolnshire Wolds are each within an hour's drive.
